If you specify or review bank stabilization or a seawall in South or Central Florida, this page gives you the published figures behind what we build, and the site limits we work to.

1What you need

Technical parameters, the license, and a contractor to specify or refer

ShoreWorks LLC installs geotube banks under sod, Flexamat concrete block mats, vinyl sheet-pile walls with a concrete cap, and riprap, in 21 counties of South and Central Florida. Florida Certified General Contractor CGC1513865.

The figures in the next section are published by the manufacturers and by the water management district, and each is given with its source. The limits beside them are ours: the conditions a geotube bank is built to.

If a client of yours has an eroding bank or a seawall question, call (954) 284-0812 or use the form below. We call back within 2 hours on business days (usually sooner).

2Parameters

The figures you can check

Published figures first, each with its source. Then the limits we work to on a geotube bank.

Published by the manufacturer or the district

  • Tube fabric. Mirafi® FW404, a woven polypropylene fabric from Solmax (formerly TenCate). The manufacturer’s data sheet gives its opening size as U.S. sieve 40 (0.425 mm) and its UV resistance as 90% of strength kept after 500 hours in a laboratory test. That figure is a laboratory comparison between fabrics. It says nothing about years in service.
  • Erosion blanket. North American Green C125: coconut fiber between two polypropylene nets. Its manufacturer gives it a functional longevity of up to 36 months, and says this may vary with climate, soil and location.
  • Side slope. Stormwater lakes in the South Florida Water Management District are designed with side slopes no steeper than 4:1, from the top of the bank to at least two feet below the control elevation (SFWMD Applicant’s Handbook Vol. II, section 5.3.2(e)). It is that district’s design criterion. Other water management districts in South and Central Florida have their own.

Our limits on a geotube bank

  • Shelf. The tube needs a flat ledge under the water: about five feet wide and about six inches below the surface, so that the base tube stands a few inches above the waterline. We check it with a grade rod.
  • Level and height. The base tube is set to a laser level. With sand and sod on top, the finished edge comes to about a foot.
  • Deeper water. A submerged tube sits in front of and below the base tube, permanently under water.
  • Overlay. A nonwoven geotextile, Mirafi® 140N, goes over the tube on every job.
  • Stacked tubes. Tubes can be stacked on a higher bank. How many is set by a calculation of what the bank can carry.
  • Cover. The fabric of the backfill tube is folded back over the rounded edge of the base tube, and sod runs to the water’s edge, so that no fabric is left facing the sun.
  • Sod. St. Augustine ‘Floratam’ for most communities; 419 or Celebration Bermuda on golf courses.
