1Method

What a gabion is

The method as a public source describes it.

A gabion is a wire basket filled with rock. UF/IFAS Extension, the University of Florida’s extension service, describes how a wall is made of them. Wire cages are filled with rock to make large rectangular blocks, and the blocks are stacked beside and on top of one another to form a retaining wall. It notes that gabions are often seen next to bridges and on steep slopes, and that an early use was along rivers, to stabilize the shore.

By the same source, a gabion wall is not a solid barrier: water can pass through it. On or near salt water, it advises a marine-grade caging material, to avoid rust.

A gabion wall can hold even a vertical bank, and it does not depend on a water control structure.
